McDonald’s has come under intense scrutiny following its announcement that the fast-food chain will be offering complimentary meals to Israeli soldiers in the midst of the ongoing conflict with Hamas. McDonald’s Israel shared the news on its Instagram account, revealing its commitment to providing thousands of free meals to hospitals and troops within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The statement from McDonald’s Israel reads, “Yesterday, we donated 4,000 meals to hospitals and military units. We plan to continue donating thousands of meals daily to soldiers both in the field and in drafting areas, going above and beyond the discounts offered to soldiers visiting our restaurants. We’ve even opened five dedicated restaurants solely for this purpose.”
This move sparked a wave of criticism from many users. Some expressed concerns about supporting a company involved in a conflict, especially when innocent lives are at stake. Calls for a McDonald’s boycott emerged, with users emphasizing the importance of aligning actions with beliefs and principles.
Conversely, some users applauded McDonald’s for its support of Israel, with one stating, “Well done, McDonald’s Israel.” Notably, the official McDonald’s Israel account has since become private, possibly in response to the controversy.
The fallout from McDonald’s gesture became apparent as protests erupted in Lebanon on October 13. Palestinian groups reportedly attacked a McDonald’s restaurant in Spinneys, Sidon, though no injuries were reported. McDonald’s Lebanon issued a statement emphasizing that the actions of other franchisees in different countries do not represent their views or positions. The statement underscores their commitment to the nation and its people, with the utmost respect and solidarity.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s Oman took to social media to express support for Gaza, pledging a $100,000 donation towards relief efforts for the region. They affirmed their humanitarian sympathy for the people of Gaza and their unwavering commitment to principles and values.
McDonald’s UAE also weighed in, expressing deep sadness over the regional events and donating AED 1 million to the Emirates Red Crescent in support of the “Tarahum for Gaza” campaign. Similarly, McDonald’s in Turkey announced a significant “humanitarian aid” of $1 million aimed at helping those in Gaza who have been affected by the conflict, particularly women, children, and the elderly.
McDonald’s Kuwait’s local representatives, Maousherji Catering Company, conveyed their support for Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza, and reaffirmed their Arab and Kuwaiti identity. They clarified that the actions of McDonald’s in Israel were an individual decision and not a global one, nor were they approved by other local operators. McDonald’s Kuwait is also donating $250,000 to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society to aid in Gaza’s relief efforts.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 2,215 Palestinians, including 724 children, reported killed in Gaza, as per Hamas officials. In Israel, at least 1,300 people have lost their lives during the same period, with the majority of casualties occurring in response to a recent attack by Hamas, according to Israeli officials.
