What to Do If Someone Threatens to Leak Your Extremely Personal Photos After Telling You to Delete Them?

If your ex-boyfriend, current angry boyfriend, or any other man is threatening to post your extremely personal photos on Facebook or WhatsApp groups or expects something inappropriate from you,

Did you know that the police can enforce the law under the charge of criminal intimidation (Penal Code 483)?

Many women feel scared when someone threatens to upload such photos or says they will. Consequently, many people tend to give in to the demands out of fear. Alternatively, some may attempt to harm themselves or die by suicide. Why sacrifice your precious life because of someone else?

Let’s look at the legal steps we can take to avoid harming ourselves.

    Inform the Nearest Police Station

    1. You need to go to the police. Do not go empty-handed. If you go to the police, take screenshots of the threatening messages or recordings of the threatening calls.
    2. It is best to go with an adult if you can, but a close friend is also fine.

    Child and Women’s Bureau

If you think the nearest police station isn’t handling the matter properly, then go to the Child and Women’s Bureau in Grandpass, Colombo.

    Further Legal Advice

If needed, you can get free legal advice from the Legal Aid Commission at the nearest court.

    Essential Phone Numbers

    1. You can call the Ministry’s hotline number – 1938 to get advice from home.
    2. Police Child and Women’s Bureau Phone Number: 011 244 4444
    3. Women in Need (WIN) Phone Numbers: 077 567 6555, 077 734 9100, 011 267 1401-11, 011 461 5549

Before doing anything, call and get advice, and take all the necessary documents they suggest.

In some cases, you may not need to go to court. A voice recording or written statement can be enough to file a case against the person.

If someone mentions leaking or blackmailing for the first time, immediately file a complaint with CERT. Send an email to report@cert.gov.lk.

By emailing, within a few hours, you will receive guidance to file a complaint with the CID or through Telligp (http://telligp.police.lk).

Subsequent legal actions will be promptly taken.

    Therefore, do not be afraid.
